Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) / Follicular Unit Excission

Follicular Unit Extraction or Excission (FUE) is one of the two primary methods of obtaining hair follicles for hair transplantation. FUE is a minimally invasive hair transplant technique compared to FUT. Additionally, FUE provides an alternative to FUT when the scalp is too tight for a strip excision. Individual hair follicular units are extracted from the donor area which is usually at back and sides of the scalp where hair is resistant to balding. Grafts can also be collected from Beard and other parts of the body like chest, rarely from axilla and pubic regions.

FUE is done under local anesthesia. The surgeon uses a small, circular hand held device called punch to extract individual follicular units. The extracted hair follicular units are then carefully transplanted into the recipient area.

FUE is a safe technique. FUE leaves no linear scars in the donor area unlike the traditional strip method of hair transplantation (FUT). FUE can leave very tiny, round, and typically white scars in the patient's donor area where the grafts have been removed. But it is very rare.

FUE allows for more precise and selective extraction of hair follicles. FUE has quicker recovery time and allows for shorter haircuts post procedure.

FUE is a time consuming procedure. Like any medical procedure FUE hair transplant carries some risks such as bleeding, scarring (very rare with us). The success of the procedure depends on the skill and experience of the hair transplant surgeon and technicians involved in the procedure.
